Tasmania
Tasmanians have supported the ABC since the early 2000s, with active groups meeting regularly across the state — originally as Friends of the ABC, renamed ABC Friends in 2014.
Members and supporters are spread throughout Tasmania. The organisation hosts events each year to benefit members and highlight public broadcasting issues, including an annual celebration of Australian independent journalism — marking June 1824, when Andrew Bent defied colonial censorship to publish his newspaper.
ABC Friends Tasmania is an Incorporated Association governed by a volunteer Committee elected at the Annual General Meeting. As a community-based organisation, it is wholly dependent on member support.
